Musical Style

Melodic line is extended through the alternation of different instruments or instrumental groups.

Lieder and symphonies are interrelated. Several of his symphonies are related to Mahler's preoccupation with thoughts of death.

Harmony and tonal relationships are ambivalent and full of uncertainties.

No 1, 4,6 and 9 symphonies have the traditional movements. Instrumentation for his symphonies are enormous. Extensive brass section.
